Worker Killed in Gimje Excavator Accident... Ministry of Employment and Labor Launches "Serious Accidents Punishment Act" Investigation
A worker was killed in an excavator overturn accident at a civil engineering site in Gimje, North Jeolla Province, prompting the Ministry of Employment and Labor to launch an investigation under the Serious Accidents Punishment Act.
According to the Ministry of Employment and Labor on March 9, at around 4:35 p.m. the previous day, an excavator overturned and fell into the water while moving at the Saemangeum Smart Waterfront City reclamation construction site in Jinbong-myeon, Gimje. As a result of this accident, a subcontractor employee, identified as A (67), died.
The Serious Accidents Punishment Act, which has been in effect since January 27, allows for the punishment of business owners or management responsible for failing to fulfill their obligations to prevent accidents in workplaces with 50 or more regular employees (or, in the construction industry, for projects worth 5 billion won or more) if a serious industrial accident, such as a worker's death, occurs.
Since the construction cost of this site exceeds 5 billion won, it falls under the scope of the Serious Accidents Punishment Act.
