Carbon Reduction and Recycled Materials... Home Appliance Industry Truly Committed to Eco-Friendliness
[Asia Economy Reporter Donghyun Choi] As carbon neutrality policies are being actively implemented worldwide to address environmental issues and overcome the climate crisis, companies are prioritizing sustainable management and actively participating in environmental protection. In particular, this 'green wave' is sweeping across the home appliance industry, accelerating eco-friendly management from large corporations to small and medium-sized enterprises.
Food waste, which increases every year, is cited as a major cause of environmental pollution. According to statistics released by the Ministry of Environment in 2019, the daily amount of food waste generated reaches 14,314 tons, resulting in an annual carbon emission of as much as 8.85 million tons. In response, the home appliance industry is introducing food waste processors that drastically reduce food waste and help lower carbon emissions, gaining positive responses from consumers.
SmartCara’s ‘SmartCara 400’ is an eco-friendly food waste processor that uses patented reduction technology to dry and grind food waste at high temperatures, reducing the mass of food waste by up to 90%. It meets standards for reduction, energy saving, low noise, deodorization performance, and energy consumption reduction, becoming the first food waste processor to receive the Ministry of Environment’s eco-friendly mark.
A SmartCara representative said, "SmartCara has grown in the domestic food waste processor industry based on 12 years of accumulated proprietary drying and grinding technology," adding, "We will continue to strive through ongoing research and development to ensure that food waste processors go beyond convenient home appliances and realize eco-friendly values."
As environmental issues become a hot topic, demand for recycled products made from waste plastics, waste textiles, and other materials is steadily increasing. Home appliances are also following this trend by launching recycled products that apply recycled materials extracted from discarded appliances and electronic devices, actively utilizing eco-friendly materials.
SK Magic’s ‘All Clean Air Purifier Green 242’ is an air purifier made with 99.5% eco-friendly plastic (PCR-ABS). The number ‘242’ in the product name signifies the recycling effect of reusing 242 discarded 500ml single-use PET bottles. It is characterized by applying eco-friendly materials to all internal and external parts of the product except for essential components. Additionally, it has a carbon reduction effect equivalent to the amount absorbed by one 30-year-old pine tree over six months, and through separate collection upon product disposal, it enables 100% resource recycling into other eco-friendly products.
As consumers’ caution toward waste increases, many have begun to consider product packaging as a criterion for selection. Beyond using recyclable packaging materials, upcycling packages that add new value to discarded packaging to achieve zero waste are gaining attention.

Samsung Electronics has significantly reduced plastic use in product packaging for environmental protection and introduced an ‘Eco Package’ that allows packaging to be recycled. The ‘Eco Package’ applies a dot pattern to the packaging box so that it can be easily transformed into items such as cat houses or small furniture. Through QR codes, consumers are provided with instructions for making various accessories, enabling recycling through an eco-friendly package. Even if only one accessory is made per box for upcycling, it is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by over 10,000 tons.
