Courier Union Ends Strike After 65 Days... Discussions on Supplementary Agreement Begin Immediately Upon Return to Work
Strike Began on December 28 Last Year
Subsidiary Agreement Discussions to Conclude by June 30
[Asia Economy Reporter Gong Byung-sun] The Korean Confederation of Trade Unions’ National Courier Workers' Union (Courier Union) has decided to end the strike after discussions with the CJ Logistics Courier Agency Federation (Agency Federation). Once union members return to work, both parties will begin discussions on a supplementary agreement.
On the 2nd, the Courier Union announced around 3 p.m. in front of the CJ Logistics headquarters in Jung-gu, Seoul, that "Courier Union members will immediately end the strike and return to the field." The Courier Union and the Agency Federation started talks from 2 p.m. that day and agreed to end the strike.
The Courier Union explained, "Union members will return after drafting a standard contract with individual agencies based on the remaining period of the existing contract," adding, "Union members will actively participate in service normalization and will not obstruct lawful substitute deliveries." Until now, the Courier Union had opposed allowing substitute deliveries, arguing that non-union personnel would take delivery volumes and reduce income.
Further agreements will continue. The Courier Union and the Agency Federation agreed to start negotiations on a supplementary agreement immediately upon returning to work and to complete it by June 30. Additionally, individual agencies will cooperate to prevent any civil or criminal complaints or accusations related to this strike from proceeding.
The Courier Union began the strike on December 28 last year. On the 10th, they demanded talks with CJ Logistics and occupied the CJ Logistics headquarters in Jung-gu, Seoul, lifting the sit-in after 19 days.
