Lee Jae-myung Campaigns in Myeongdong: "Determined to Win at the Final Campaign Sites of DJ and Roh Moo-hyun"
"If the navigator is incompetent, it is difficult to reach the destination"
[Asia Economy Reporters Oh Ju-yeon and Lee Myung-hwan] On the 1st, Lee Jae-myung, the presidential candidate of the Democratic Party of Korea, who held a concentrated campaign rally in Myeongdong, Seoul, appealed for support, saying, "I stand here with the determination to start again where former Presidents Kim Dae-jung and Roh Moo-hyun secured their victories," and "Today, I will take a big step toward a decisive victory in Myeongdong. Please join me."
That afternoon, Candidate Lee said in front of Noon Square in Myeongdong, "Myeongdong symbolizes overcoming crises, economic revival, and democracy." He added, "Also, this is the place where candidate Kim Dae-jung held his final rally in 1997, and candidate Roh Moo-hyun did the same in 2002," emphasizing, "Let us create the steps toward victory together at this sacred site of democratization and historical landmark."
Especially emphasizing 'unity,' he targeted Yoon Seok-youl, the presidential candidate of the People Power Party, saying, "We must move beyond divisive politics that sow hatred and conflict, and outdated politics rife with retaliation and political strife, to create true unified politics and a national cabinet grand coalition government with our own hands."
He said, "The Democratic Party held a party meeting last weekend and resolved to move toward political reform and regime change?not a worse regime change, but a better political change and societal transformation," drawing responses from supporters by stating, "It is time to end the political monopoly of the two major parties and the politics that force the choice of the lesser evil."
Candidate Lee emphasized, "During my brief political career, as I did in Seongnam and Gyeonggi Province, I will not discriminate by faction if the talent is competent, nor will I distinguish between the policies of Park Chung-hee or Kim Dae-jung if the policies are good," adding, "I will clearly demonstrate rational and future-oriented politics that harness the strengths of talented individuals and foster competition to create a better world."
Regarding diplomatic issues, he said, "It is difficult for an unprepared president to take responsibility for the future of 52 million South Koreans," and indirectly criticized Candidate Yoon by saying, "One of my favorite sayings is 'Waves and wind are always on the sailor's side,' but even if the waves and wind help, if the sailor is incompetent, it is hard to reach the destination."
Candidate Lee reiterated that "national crises require experience, future insight, and wisdom," highlighting himself as a 'prepared presidential candidate.'
