[Asia Economy Reporter Ki Ha-young] The cumulative number of COVID-19 confirmed cases has surpassed 3 million. As new confirmed cases increase, the number of critically ill patients has also exceeded 700, and the death toll has reached an all-time high.
The Central Disease Control Headquarters announced on the 28th at midnight that the number of new COVID-19 confirmed cases increased by 139,626, bringing the total cumulative confirmed cases to 3,134,456. It took 770 days since the first domestic COVID-19 case was reported on January 20, 2020, to surpass 3 million. It took 748 days to reach 1 million cases on the 6th of this month, 15 days to reach 2 million, and only one week to reach 3 million, showing a decreasing interval.
The number of new confirmed cases on this day slightly decreased due to the weekend effect, but it is expected to increase again from weekdays when the number of tests returns to normal levels.
Among the new domestic confirmed cases, high-risk groups aged 60 and over accounted for 20,997 (15.1%), and those aged 18 and under accounted for 35,055 (25.1%).
As new confirmed cases increase, the number of critically ill patients and deaths is also rising. The number of critically ill patients exceeded 700 for the first time. As of midnight on this day, there were 715 critically ill patients, an increase of 52 from the previous day (663). The number had been maintained in the 200s in mid-month but rose to the 400s on the 19th, 500s on the 23rd, and 600s on the 25th, showing an increasing trend.
The number of deaths also reached a record high of 114 on this day. The cumulative death toll is 8,058, with a cumulative fatality rate of 0.26%.
Accordingly, hospital bed occupancy rates are also rising. The total number of COVID-19 hospital beds is 46,937, with occupancy rates of 48.2% for critically ill beds, 68.2% for semi-critical beds, and 54.3% for moderate beds. The operation rate of residential treatment centers is 24.2%.
