[Asia Economy Reporter Seoyoung Kwon] Song Young-gil, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, mentioned the Ukraine crisis and commented on Yoon Seok-yeol, the presidential candidate of the People Power Party, saying, "From the perspective of the United States, he will be evaluated as a dangerous figure who is unprepared."
On the 27th, Leader Song posted on Facebook under the title "We urge Russia to cease all military actions against Ukraine and resume diplomatic negotiations," expressing these views. He stated, "Russia's full-scale military attack on Ukraine and the act of launching missiles at residential areas where civilians live are unacceptable acts of aggression and inhumane acts," and added, "As a permanent member of the UN Security Council, we must reflect on whether such actions align with the UN Charter."
Leader Song mentioned, "President Moon Jae-in criticized Russia's military actions and declared participation in international sanctions against Russia," and "Lee Jae-myung, the Democratic Party's presidential candidate, also criticized Russia's armed invasion and clearly opposed it." He continued, "If Candidate Lee wins the presidential election, we will actively consult to halt military actions and make full use of the diplomatic networks established with Russian and Ukrainian politicians so that South Korea can play an active role in the international community's efforts to find a solution."
Furthermore, Leader Song referred to Yoon's remarks during the TV debate held on the 25th, saying, "Candidate Yoon spoke of peace based on strength. I agree 100%," but also pointed out, "South Korea has grown into the world's sixth-largest military power that no one can challenge," and "I hope Candidate Yoon studies well and speaks with the fact in mind that during the Moon Jae-in administration, based on this military strength, there was not a single military clash between North and South Korea."
Leader Song also criticized, "Candidate Yoon, who is under suspicion of evading military service for unclear reasons, talks about additional deployment of THAAD, which even the United States opposes, and the People Power Party and Candidate Yoon, who have no operational control during wartime and no intention to retrieve it, mention preemptive strikes, which does not practically help our national security," adding, "From the U.S. perspective, he will be seen as an absurd and unprepared dangerous figure."
