Germany and the Netherlands Provide Weapons Support to Ukraine
[Asia Economy Reporter Cho Hyun-ui] Germany will supply Ukraine with 1,000 anti-tank weapons and 500 portable infrared-guided surface-to-air missiles 'Stinger' for shooting down military aircraft.
On the 26th (local time), the German government announced that these weapons, held by the German Bundeswehr, will be sent to Ukraine, according to major foreign media reports.
Chancellor Olaf Scholz wrote on Twitter, "Russia's invasion of Ukraine is a turning point," adding, "Our mission is to do our best to support Ukraine in defending against the Russian army."
Earlier, the German Defense Minister announced approval to export 400 portable anti-tank rocket launchers (RPG) to Ukraine. The 400 RPGs are held by the German military and are expected to be delivered to Ukraine via the Netherlands.
A German government official told foreign media, "Considering Russia's attacks on Ukraine, our government is prepared to urgently distribute necessary supplies to protect Ukraine."
This move reverses Germany's long-standing policy of banning arms exports to conflict zones. Germany is also sending up to 10,000 tons of oil to Ukraine through Poland and is considering additional support.
The Netherlands is also sending anti-tank weapons to Ukraine.
The Dutch government reported to parliament that it will provide 200 portable Stinger missiles, 50 Panzerfaust-3 anti-tank weapons, and 400 rockets.
