Dead body of 'Sanggwaengi' found in Aewol, Jeju... 17 found this year alone
[Jeju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Hwang Jeongpil] The carcass of a finless porpoise, designated as a marine protected species, was found near Gamundong Port in Aewol-eup, Jeju City.
According to the Jeju Coast Guard on the 25th, a report was received around 2 p.m. the previous day about a dolphin carcass near Gamundong Port in Aewol-eup, Jeju City.
Upon receiving the report, the Jeju Coast Guard dispatched a patrol team from Hallim Police Substation, arriving at the scene at 2:21 p.m. They found a severely decomposed dolphin drifting along with a pile of debris on the rocky shore 150 meters east of Gamundong Port.
After collecting evidence, the Hallim Police Substation patrol team consulted the National Institute of Fisheries Science Whale Research Center, which confirmed it was a male finless porpoise measuring 116 cm in length and 75 cm in girth, deceased for approximately 15 days, with no signs of illegal capture. The carcass was handed over to the local government at around 3:21 p.m.
The Jeju Coast Guard reported that the number of finless porpoises found this year was 17 in total?11 in January and 6 in February?all showing no signs of illegal capture.
A Jeju Coast Guard official stated, “If whales, sea turtles, or other marine protected species designated in Korea are found caught in fishing nets during operations or dead along the coast, please promptly report to the Coast Guard.”
