Intel Unveils New Updates for Network and Edge at MWC 2022
[Asia Economy Reporter Jin-ho Kim] On the 24th (local time), Intel unveiled programmable hardware and open software during its keynote speech at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2022 held in Barcelona, Spain. Intel plans to support customers and developers in driving innovation at scale while further expanding its market leadership.
In the keynote, Intel revealed various details including architectural improvements of the next-generation Intel Xeon Scalable processor, Sapphire Rapids, upcoming CPUs, and a new system-on-chip designed for software-defined networking and edge computing called the Intel Xeon D processor.
On the software front, Intel announced significant enhancements across its portfolio, including the OpenVINO 2022.1 version and new software modules for Intel® Smart Edge, enabling developers to achieve improved performance and flexibility for edge computing innovation.
Nick McKeown, Intel Senior Fellow and Senior Vice President of the Network and Edge Group, explained, “As an era of innovation for network and edge transformation arrives, we are announcing this innovation to meet the demands for greater control, adaptability, and scalability.”
Intel’s new Xeon D processor is designed with network and edge-specific features. It offers integrated artificial intelligence (AI), encryption acceleration, built-in Ethernet, Time Coordinated Computing (TCC) support, time-sensitive networking, and a high level of reliability.
The new Intel Xeon D processor demonstrated excellent performance in use cases such as security appliances, enterprise routers and switches, cloud storage, wireless networks, and AI inference, where computing processing must be executed close to where data is generated.
As computing at the edge increases and AI inference becomes a critical task across all industries, Intel announced two software updates. These updates provide a strong developer experience by enabling developers to easily access Intel hardware capabilities through an open cloud-native platform.
