[Asia Economy Reporter Na Ye-eun] As Russian President Vladimir Putin declared the commencement of military operations in eastern Ukraine, a foreign correspondent reporting on the local situation in Ukraine was broadcast live hurriedly putting on protective gear upon hearing the sound of explosions.
On the 24th (local time), Matthew Chance, CNN’s Ukraine correspondent, was live broadcasting the imminent Russian invasion from Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, in the early morning. Suddenly, vivid explosion sounds were heard from afar, and Matthew crouched down with a short exclamation of "Oh."
He then received protective clothing and a hat while staying low, and the reporting was interrupted. The anchor explained to viewers with a serious expression that the situation was due to the explosion sounds.
However, the camera continued to film Matthew, who said, "I just heard an explosion behind me. Until a few hours ago, Ukraine was very quiet. This is the first time I’ve heard such sounds."
Wearing bulletproof gear, Matthew resumed reporting, saying, "I can’t see clearly with the naked eye, so I don’t know exactly what is happening. But hearing these explosions right after Russian President Vladimir Putin’s speech is shocking. Something unimaginable is happening."
Meanwhile, the Ukrainian military announced around 5 a.m. that the Ukrainian border was attacked by the Russia-Belarus allied forces. CNN reported continuous explosion sounds in seven cities including the capital Kyiv, and captured dozens of tanks and armored vehicles crossing the border in a line from the Belarus side.
Currently, Ukraine has mobilized reservists in preparation for the Russian invasion, declared a state of emergency, and gave final approval. It also passed legislation allowing civilians to possess and use firearms for self-defense.
