Hyundai Motor Group's 21 Models Selected as 'Safest Cars' in US IIHS Crash Tests
The Global Auto Group with the Most Model Names Listed
[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunseok Yoo] Hyundai Motor Group's Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis models have proven to be the safest in the United States.
Hyundai Motor Group announced that in the crash evaluation released on the 24th (local time) by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), 11 models were awarded the 'Top Safety Pick Plus (TSP+)' rating, and 10 models received the 'Top Safety Pick (TSP)' rating.
Among Hyundai Motor Group's vehicles, a total of 21 models received TSP or higher ratings: 8 each from Hyundai and Kia, and 5 from Genesis. This is the highest number among global automotive groups. Genesis received the highest rating for all models sold in the U.S. market.
The TSP+ rated models include four Hyundai models: Tucson, Santa Fe, Palisade, and Nexo; two Kia models: K5 and Stinger; and five Genesis models: G70, G80, G90, GV70, and GV80.
The models that received the TSP rating are four Hyundai models: Avante (known locally as Elantra), Sonata, Venue, and Santa Cruz; and six Kia models: Soul, Seltos, Sportage, Sorento, Telluride, and Carnival.
IIHS is a nonprofit organization established in 1959. Every year, it comprehensively evaluates and publishes results on the crash safety performance and crash prevention capabilities of vehicles released in the U.S. market.
Vehicles demonstrating the highest safety receive the TSP+ rating, while those with good performance receive the TSP rating.
To earn a TSP rating, a vehicle must receive the highest 'Good' rating in all six crash safety categories: driver-side small overlap, passenger-side small overlap, front crash, side crash, roof strength, and head restraint.
Additionally, the vehicle must achieve at least an 'Advanced' rating in the front crash prevention system test and a 'Good' or higher rating in the headlight evaluation.
The TSP+ rating requires, in addition to the above, that a 'Good' or higher headlight rating be standard across all trims.
This year, 65 models received the TSP+ rating, 36 models received the TSP rating, totaling 101 models selected.
