Content urging the economic sector to become key participants in the formation process of the 'Pandemic International Treaty'
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Sun-mi] The Federation of Korean Industries (FKI) announced on the 24th that it has delivered a letter to the World Health Organization (WHO) requesting that the business sector be guaranteed participation in the new pandemic treaty.
The FKI, together with major economic organizations from 17 countries including the United States, Japan, Germany, and the United Kingdom, sent a letter to the WHO urging that the business sector become a key participant in the creation process of the upcoming "International Pandemic Treaty." The letter includes the following points: ▲ Successful pandemic response is only possible through cooperation among governments, businesses, and civil society ▲ Emphasizing the important role of the private sector in pandemic response so far, including the development of medical and public health products and services, research and dissemination of epidemiological data, and the spread of communication technologies ▲ Establishing a decision-making process that allows the private sector to actively participate in all stages of treaty negotiations.

At the end of last year, the WHO resolved to establish an international treaty for global-scale epidemic response. Accordingly, an intergovernmental negotiating body was formed and began treaty drafting work with its first meeting on the 24th (local time). A mid-term report is scheduled for 2023, and a final report will be submitted to the World Health Assembly in 2024.
