[Asia Economy Reporter Minyoung Cha] Samsung Electronics, practicing the motto 'Galaxy for the Earth,' will showcase its efforts in developing eco-friendly technologies to the world at the Mobile World Congress (MWC), the world's largest mobile and IT exhibition.
On the 24th, Tae-moon Roh, President of Samsung Electronics' MX Division, posted an article titled "Opening a Sustainable Future through Mobile Innovation" on the Samsung Newsroom, stating, "At MWC 2022, we plan to present innovations using materials recycled from discarded fishing nets."
President Roh said, "Samsung Electronics has been striving to combine technological innovation with sustainability," adding, "We are making efforts in various areas, from developing eco-friendly materials to establishing global partnerships, to create a better tomorrow."
Earlier, Samsung Electronics unveiled the Galaxy S22 series smartphones and Galaxy Tab S8 series, which incorporate parts made from recycled fishing nets, during the recent Galaxy Unpacked event. It is expected that the new PC lineup, Galaxy Book, to be unveiled through an online event on the 27th ahead of MWC, will also feature eco-friendly technologies.
This initiative is part of the industry's focus on ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) management. In August last year, Samsung announced a new vision called 'Galaxy for the Earth' and declared its plan to apply recycled materials to new Galaxy products by 2025. Eco-friendly materials are applied to Galaxy mobile products and packaging, and parts made from recycled post-consumer materials (PCM) are utilized.
President Roh emphasized, "Every year, 640,000 tons of fishing gear are discarded into the ocean, posing a serious threat to marine life and natural ecosystems," adding, "We will continue to minimize the environmental impact of Galaxy products and help users pursue a more sustainable lifestyle."
Mobile innovation through the Galaxy ecosystem is also expected to support the efforts of young leaders. A representative example is Generation17. Samsung Electronics collaborates with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to help young leaders address climate change and education issues and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030. Recently, six young leaders joined, expanding their stage to Africa, Asia-Pacific, Europe, North America, Latin America, and the Middle East.
President Roh said, "I feel deep respect for those who are changing the world through Galaxy," and emphasized, "Samsung Electronics promises to continue pushing boundaries, connecting the world, and developing innovative technologies for a sustainable future for these individuals."
He added, "We will share with everyone the challenges, successes, and lessons learned from genuine actions rather than empty promises," and expressed hope that "Samsung Electronics' relentless steps toward a better tomorrow will become a meaningful driving force in the global movement for a sustainable future."
