Home Treatment Also Surpasses 520,000 Patients
[Asia Economy Reporter Ki Ha-young] The daily number of new COVID-19 cases has surpassed 170,000. This marks an increase of over 70,000 cases in just one day, indicating an accelerated spread of the Omicron variant.
The Central Disease Control Headquarters announced on the 23rd at midnight that the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases increased by 171,452, bringing the total cumulative cases to 2,329,182. The number of new cases surged by 71,879 compared to the previous day (99,573 cases).
Compared to a week ago on the 16th (90,439 cases), the figure is 1.9 times higher, and compared to two weeks ago on the 9th (49,549 cases), it is 3.5 times higher. The number of new cases exceeded 20,000 on the 2nd, 30,000 on the 5th, 40,000 on the 9th, 50,000 on the 10th, 90,000 on the 16th, and 100,000 on the 18th.
The number of critically ill patients also surpassed 500. As of midnight on the same day, there were 512 critically ill patients, an increase of 32 from the previous day (480). The number of deaths rose by 41 to 99 compared to the previous day. The cumulative death toll stands at 7,607, with a cumulative fatality rate of 0.33%.
As COVID-19 cases surged, the number of patients receiving home treatment also exceeded 500,000. As of midnight on the same day, the number of home treatment patients was 521,294, an increase of 3,972 from the previous day's 490,322. The number of home treatment patients first exceeded 300,000 on the 17th with 314,565, rose to over 400,000 on the 19th (401,137), and has now surpassed 500,000. Compared to a week ago on the 16th (266,040), this is a twofold increase.

The number of confirmed cases is expected to continue rising. Domestic and international research institutions have projected that the Omicron wave in Korea will peak at the end of this month or next month, with daily new cases at the peak estimated to be between 140,000 and 270,000.
