Three White Men Found Guilty of Hate Crime for Killing Black Man While Jogging
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyunjung] Three white men who fatally shot a Black young man jogging in Georgia, USA, were found guilty by a jury in a hate crime trial.
On the 22nd (local time), The Wall Street Journal reported that the jury in the Southern District Federal Court of Georgia found Gregory McMichael, his son Travis, and William Bryan guilty of hate crime charges. The three men shot and killed 25-year-old Black young man Ahmaud Arbery, who was jogging unarmed in Brunswick, Georgia, in February 2020.
At the time, they claimed that the shooting occurred during a pursuit because they suspected Arbery was involved in a nearby theft incident, and argued that the incident was unrelated to Arbery's skin color. However, it was confirmed that Arbery was exercising that day, and there was no evidence linking him to any crime. During the trial, the three men's past racist remarks were also presented.
The jury determined that their motive for the crime was racial prejudice because Arbery was Black, and delivered a guilty verdict on the hate crime charges. U.S. federal law considers crimes that violate human rights based on race, gender, or national origin as hate crimes and imposes enhanced penalties.
They had already been found guilty of murder in a prior trial in Georgia state court and sentenced to life imprisonment. In particular, McMichael was sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.

Nima Ramani, a former federal prosecutor, stated that this verdict carries symbolic significance. He explained, "Many people doubt that our justice system is colorblind," adding, "This kind of verdict sends a message that no one is above the law, and that hate crime laws are enforced with federal government intervention."
