New York Consul General Urges New York City to Prevent Anti-Asian Hate Crimes
[Asia Economy New York=Special Correspondent Joselgina] Jung Byunghwa, Consul General of the Republic of Korea in New York, held a virtual meeting with senior New York City officials on the 22nd (local time) to urge active attention and cooperation from New York City on major recent concerns of the Korean community, including responses to anti-Asian hate crimes.
According to the Consulate General in New York, during the meeting, Consul General Jung conveyed the Korean community's deep concerns about the recent series of anti-Asian hate crimes to Edward Mermelstein, Commissioner of the International Relations Department, Fred Krizman, Commissioner of the Community Affairs Department, and others.
He also emphasized the need for thorough investigations and strengthened preventive measures against anti-Asian hate crimes, cooperation in providing information when incidents occur, and the implementation of school history education about Asian Americans.
He mentioned that this year marks the 140th anniversary of Korea-US diplomatic relations and the 10th anniversary of the Korea-US FTA, an important year for the Korea-US alliance, and exchanged opinions on ▲ the opening of the New York Tourism and Culture Center scheduled for completion this year ▲ startup entrepreneurship in the Korean community ▲ difficulties faced by Korean businesses due to supply chain issues and labor shortages.
In response, Commissioner Mermelstein and other senior New York City officials acknowledged their awareness of the Korean community's concerns and promised to maintain close communication with the Consulate General and the Korean community going forward.
