US Secretary of State Strongly Condemns Russia's Recognition of Donbas Separatist Independence
[Asia Economy New York=Special Correspondent Joselgina] U.S. Secretary of State Tony Blinken strongly condemned Russia's recognition of the self-proclaimed republics declared by pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine's Donbas region on the 21st (local time).
In a statement released that afternoon, Secretary Blinken said, "We strongly condemn Russian President Vladimir Putin's recognition of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic (DPR) and Luhansk People's Republic (LPR)," calling it "a blatant attack on Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity."
He pointed out that Russia's decision is a "clear rejection of the Minsk peace agreements" and contradicts Russia's previous commitments to resolving the Ukraine crisis diplomatically.
Additionally, Secretary Blinken stated, "Every country has an obligation not to recognize new states created by force or coercion, and an obligation not to disturb the borders of other countries," criticizing, "Russia's decision is another example of President Putin's blatant disregard for international law."
Furthermore, Secretary Blinken confirmed that the Biden administration will immediately impose sanctions.
He emphasized, "President Biden will issue an executive order banning new investments, trade, and financial transactions in the self-proclaimed separatist regions within Ukraine," adding, "We will take appropriate measures together with Ukraine and our allies."
