People Power Party to Ahn, who withdrew from unification: "We must not disappoint the people... We must continue to work together"
"Fully Understand Chungjeong"... Reserved Attitude
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jun-yi] The People Power Party responded on the 20th to Ahn Cheol-soo, the presidential candidate of the People’s Party, who withdrew his unification proposal, saying, "We hope to continue working together for regime change."
Lee Yang-soo, the chief spokesperson of the People Power Party, stated in a press release that day, "We fully understand the sincerity expressed by Candidate Ahn today."
However, he also said, "We must not disappoint the people demanding regime change." This implies a reserved response once again to the unification proposal and withdrawal process that Candidate Ahn has undertaken so far.
On the same day, Candidate Ahn held an emergency press conference at the National Assembly and said, "From now on, I will follow my own path," adding, "I sincerely apologize and ask for the understanding of the people who felt confused by the unification proposal."
Candidate Ahn claimed that the responsibility for the breakdown of the unification negotiations lies with the People Power Party. He said that a week had passed since the unification proposal, but Candidate Yoon did not respond, and the sincerity of the proposal was distorted by those around him.
