[Asia Economy reporters Ki-min Lee and Hyun-ji Kwon] On the 19th, the second day of his campaign in the Yeongnam region, Yoon Seok-yeol, the presidential candidate of the People Power Party, questioned whether the Democratic Party is truly the party that inherits the spirit of former Presidents Kim Dae-jung and Roh Moo-hyun, while in Gimhae, Gyeongnam, where former President Roh Moo-hyun’s residence and grave are located.
During his campaign in Gimhae, Gyeongnam, Yoon said, "Even if I and the People Power Party come to power with your overwhelming support, I believe that cooperation with a sensible and healthy opposition party is an essential condition for national development."
He continued, "If the philosophy of President Kim Dae-jung and the principles of President Roh Moo-hyun were even one percent present, would the Democratic Party regime be able to normalize such arrogance and corruption that disregards the people? To save the People Power Party, to save the Democratic Party, and to save the Republic of Korea, what should the citizens of Gimhae and the people of Korea do?" He emphasized, "We must create a new future through a resolute judgment on March 9."
Yoon also fiercely criticized the Democratic Party regarding the Seongnam Daejang-dong development scandal. He questioned, "Is the Democratic Party, which selects the presidential candidate responsible for the future of 50 million Koreans, really the Democratic Party of Roh Moo-hyun and Kim Dae-jung, when it allows the main culprit of urban development corruption who took 350 million won and extracted 850 billion won? Isn’t it a Democratic Party that should be ousted for the future of Korea?"
He added, "In that case, sensible, upright, and respectable Democratic Party politicians and our People Power Party politicians should work together, worrying about the nation’s future and the welfare of the people. During my public service, I have never been biased by 'conservative or progressive,' or 'this side or that side.' I have only firmly fought corruption and wrongdoing that cause pain to the people from the people's perspective," stressing that he should be president.
Regarding the pledges of Lee Jae-myung, the Democratic Party candidate, such as the national land holding tax and basic income, Yoon mentioned that they frequently change and said, "That’s why TV debates don’t go well. When asked questions, he often evades and gives irrelevant answers," raising his voice repeatedly, "Don’t believe those who sell Presidents Kim Dae-jung and Roh Moo-hyun."
On the pledge to attract a complex shopping mall, which he revealed during a recent campaign in Gwangju, he said, "Gwangju citizens don’t even have a single complex shopping mall, so people living in Gwangju and Jeonju even go to Daejeon, but the Democratic Party called it 'populism that gains profit by exploiting hatred,'" and criticized, "They are saying that if Gwangju citizens enjoy culture and shopping, Gwangju’s democratization struggle power will disappear."
He added, "While having too many complex shopping malls can be a problem, places that currently have none can become hubs that attract people by building one or two, which creates jobs and helps small businesses like restaurants thrive, as research has long shown. Doesn’t the Democratic Party know this? From the Democratic Party’s perspective, there is nothing but maintaining their power and continuing to govern; the people, the nation, and livelihoods don’t matter," he said.
