Dongdaemun District Resident Friend Ombudsman Handled 46 Complaints Last Year
Dongdaemun-gu Announces 2021 Ombudsman Operation Status... Resolving Complaints with 'Solomon's Wisdom'... Monitoring District Administration and Protecting Residents' Rights from Residents' Perspective... Awarded Best Grade for 5 Consecutive Years in Ministry of the Interior and Safety Evaluation
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Dongdaemun-gu (Mayor Yoo Deok-yeol) reported the operation status of the Seoul Dongdaemun-gu Ombudsman in 2021 to the district council on the 15th and announced it on the Dongdaemun-gu Office website.
The Ombudsman is a system designed to investigate grievances from the perspective of residents and strengthen administrative oversight functions to protect residents' rights and interests from illegal or unfair administrative actions.
Dongdaemun-gu introduced the Ombudsman system in September 2017 to take the lead in resolving residents' grievances and to respond promptly to residents' rights relief, thereby creating an opportunity to provide administration that is closer to the residents.
Currently, two ombudsmen, composed of an administrative law expert and a civil law expert, both former university professors, are active as problem solvers for residents. Last year, they handled 16 administrative recommendations, 2 expressions of opinion, 7 mediations/adjustments, and 11 persuasion cases. Ten simple complaints deemed inappropriate for Ombudsman handling were referred to the relevant departments, processing a total of 46 grievance cases last year.
The Dongdaemun-gu Ombudsman has received great public support by proposing solutions and mediating based on rich administrative experience and expertise during the grievance handling process, reducing the gap between citizens and public officials from an independent and neutral standpoint. Thanks to the investigation and judgment of complaints from the perspective of external experts rather than public officials, solutions to grievances were often easily derived.
Dongdaemun-gu has received the highest rating for five consecutive years in the "Comprehensive Evaluation of Civil Complaint Services - Grievance Handling Division," jointly hosted by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety and the Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission. Among the evaluation factors for grievance handling, it received above-average ratings in the local ombudsman activation category, recognizing the excellence of the resident ombudsman operation.
