On the 18th, Cha Min-kyu finished 18th with a time of 1 minute 9.69 seconds in the men's 1000m speed skating event held at the National Speed Skating Oval in Beijing, China, during the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.
Racing in the 10th heat on the inside lane alongside Cornelius Kersten (United Kingdom), Cha Min-kyu passed the first 200m segment with a strong time of 16.29 seconds. However, his stamina declined afterward, and he was unable to maintain his speed, resulting in a poor overall time.
The split times were 25.44 seconds for the 200?600m segment and 27.96 seconds for the 600?1000m segment.
Kim Min-seok (Seongnam City Hall), the bronze medalist in the men's 1500m, also failed to secure an additional medal. Competing in the 7th heat, Kim Min-seok finished 24th with a time of 1 minute 10.08 seconds.
Kim Min-seok reduced his speed to avoid a collision with Jordan Stolz (USA), who was racing alongside him, as he moved from the inside lane to the outside lane. Priority is given to the skater moving from the outside lane to the inside lane when paths overlap, especially in the exchange zone.
The gold medal was claimed by Thomas Krol (Netherlands) with a time of 1 minute 7.92 seconds.
