[Asia Economy Reporter Yoon Seul-gi] Yoon Yeo-jun, a senior political figure and former Minister of Environment, criticized President Moon Jae-in for maintaining a national approval rating in the 40% range even at the end of his term, saying, "President Moon has continued to engage in division tactics."
On the 17th, Yoon appeared on MBC Radio's 'Kim Jong-bae's Focus' and stated, "When President Moon Jae-in was elected, his vote share was about 41%. He is maintaining that approval rating now. Despite the government's failures being so severe that many people are disappointed and there is a lot of criticism, he still maintains the approval rating he had when elected," pointing out that the cause lies in 'division tactics.'
He explained, "Although he verbally called for unity, his actual actions were all about division. There were many instances of dividing people into 'my side' and 'the other side.' Because of that, he was able to keep his side solid. The cohesion of his supporters is why the 40% approval rating emerges," he said.
He added, "The reason many people desire a regime change is that aside from those supporters, the rest are so disappointed that they think the government must be changed. Therefore, the desire for regime change is interpreted as being stronger," he added.
Regarding the voting tendencies of the 2030 generation, Yoon said, "They consider individual freedom and rights as the highest values," and "Even superficially, it is clear that their tendencies are completely different from past voters." He continued, "Since the volatility of 2030 voters will increase significantly in the future, an era will come when politics cannot remain unchanged physically."
Yoon also criticized politics that incite regional conflicts. He said, "In the past, when parties based in the Yeongnam region worried about losing public support, they would provoke Gwangju. Then Gwangju would react strongly, followed by Yeongnam reacting strongly. In reality, such tactics should not be used. Although they verbally called for harmony between Yeongnam and Honam, in actual politics, there were many tendencies to exploit anger. Such actions should not be done," he stated.
Yoon also commented on the three presidential candidates. Regarding Lee Jae-myung, the Democratic Party presidential candidate, he said, "It seems he had the intention to run for president early on. So, while handling various provincial government tasks, I think he studied many important areas with experts in his spare time. He seems to have well-organized thoughts on issues in various fields."
About Yoon Seok-youl, the People Power Party presidential candidate, he said, "I have no personal acquaintance with him, so I have no basis to judge him." However, he added, "From reports, it seems he has spent his entire life within the high and thick walls of the prosecution, so he is too unaware of the world outside that fence. This could be very dangerous for the highest national leader." Regarding Ahn Cheol-soo, the People's Party candidate, whom he once advised as a political mentor, he evaluated, "When he first entered politics, he had little interest in public values, which I saw as the biggest problem, but recently he seems to have gained more practical sensibility than before."
