Lee Jae-myung "There is a major trend trying to reverse the adjustment of prosecution and police investigative authority"... Criticizes Yoon's prosecution pledge
[Asia Economy Reporter Ki-min Lee] On the 17th, Lee Jae-myung, the presidential candidate of the Democratic Party of Korea, stated that the adjustment of investigative authority between the prosecution and police and the autonomous police system are necessary for a fair national order, and indirectly criticized Yoon Seok-yeol, the candidate of the People Power Party, saying, "There is a major trend trying to reverse this."
On that day, during his visit to the Korea Veterans Association in Mapo-gu, Seoul, Lee said, "Judicial order is called the last bastion of human rights, and the important thing is that fairness is confirmed as the final national means."
Regarding Yoon's pledge to strengthen prosecutorial power, Lee pointed out, "As you all know well, the investigative and prosecutorial powers are being reintegrated, authority is being concentrated, and they even say they will be independent from elected powers," adding, "What should be obvious is becoming not obvious."
Lee emphasized, "There should be no investigations conducted to punish specific individuals. The adjustment of investigative authority between the prosecution and police has been partially achieved, and the autonomous police system has also been introduced to some extent and is settling in," and added, "What is needed going forward is the separation of investigative and prosecutorial powers within the prosecution."
He continued, "I ask for the interest of retired police officers as well. This is necessary not for specific interests but for a fair national order," he urged.
Regarding his recent pledge to introduce a private detective system, Lee mentioned, "Private investigations are being conducted outside the system, such as through errand centers, but they are beyond legal control, irresponsible, and the damage is spreading significantly," adding, "In that regard, I proposed introducing a detective system, and I think there are quite a few retired police officers who have interest and capability in this area."
He then said, "I wondered why this (private detective system) was not being implemented, but ultimately, the courage and determination of the final decision-maker are necessary," adding, "When conflicts of interest arise, making decisions quickly based on rational standards and promptly concluding in the originally intended desirable direction helps the nation and society. I felt this during my short public service career. I say that power should be for the people and for the country."
