View original image[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Kim Yong-woo] For the first time in Korea, an international IECEx (International Electro-technical Commission Ex) assessor has been appointed.
The Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency (KOSHA) announced on the 17th that Deputy Director Kang Jeong-il of the Industrial Safety and Health Certification Institute at KOSHA was appointed as the first international assessor of the IECEx mutual recognition system in the explosion protection field.
There are 40 international assessors registered worldwide under IECEx. Deputy Director Kang Jeong-il was appointed as the first Korean in the explosion protection equipment field (IECEx 02 Scheme).
The IECEx international assessors are responsible for auditing and evaluating the adequacy of test results and related knowledge and capabilities of certification bodies (ExCB) and testing laboratories (ExTL) in the international explosion protection field.
Deputy Director Kang has been active as a member of the International Electrotechnical Commission Technical Committee 31 (IEC/TC31) on explosion protection electrical equipment. He has served as a specialist and secretary of the domestic Explosion Protection Electrical Equipment Expert Committee and has been involved in the establishment and revision of 12 standards in the Korean Industrial Standards for explosion protection electrical equipment, the ‘KS C IEC 60079 series.’
Since 2015, he has attended the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) General Assembly for seven consecutive years and has actively participated in international chemical accident prevention activities as an expert in explosion protection electrical technology, raising the national level.
In addition, Deputy Director Kang holds two patents, including one for an ‘Explosion Ignition Test Jig,’ and one utility model registration.

Kim Young-tae, Director of the Industrial Safety and Health Certification Institute, said, “This IECEx international assessor registration is an opportunity to gain international recognition for our technical skills and work capabilities,” adding, “It is expected to enhance domestic expertise in the explosion protection field and contribute to the prevention of fire and explosion accidents.”
