40 Years of Accident-Free Flight by the Navy's P-3 Maritime Patrol Aircraft
[Asia Economy Yang Nak-gyu, Military Specialist Reporter]The Navy's 6th Air Wing 615th Flight Squadron (hereinafter 615th Squadron) has achieved a '40 years of accident-free' flight record with the P-3 maritime patrol aircraft.
According to the Navy on the 17th, an event commemorating this achievement will be held in the hangar of the 6th Air Wing 615th Flight Squadron located in Jeju in the afternoon, presided over by Navy Operations Commander Kang Dong-hoon.
Established in February 1982 at Jeju Air Base, the 615th Squadron began its first flight with the S-2 maritime patrol aircraft and the 500MD helicopter. Currently, operating the P-3 maritime patrol aircraft, it carries out various maritime air operations including patrols over Jeju Island and the southwestern sea area of the Korean Peninsula, anti-submarine and anti-ship operations, search and rescue missions, and protection of maritime traffic routes. Notably, since its establishment, the total flight distance covered by the squadron members over 40 years has reached 15.3 million kilometers, equivalent to approximately 380 laps around the Earth's circumference (40,000 km).
The Navy evaluated that such a record would have been impossible without practical training and proactive flight safety management.
