Lee Nak-yeon to Chairman Chung Mong-gyu: "You should apologize soon and face criticism"
[Asia Economy Reporter Baek Kyunghwan] Lee Nak-yeon, the Chief Election Committee Chairman of the Democratic Party of Korea, met with Chung Mong-gyu, Chairman of HDC Group, urging active follow-up measures regarding the exterior wall collapse accident at Gwangju Hwajeong-dong I-Park.
On the 16th, Chairman Lee met with Chairman Chung and Yoo Byung-gyu, CEO of Hyundai Development Company, at the Hyundai Development Company headquarters in Yongsan-gu, stating, "There must be a process where you meet the bereaved families as soon as possible, apologize as a human being, accept their scolding, and listen to their words."
He particularly pointed out, "Why do such incidents keep happening at Hyundai Development? Trust will not be restored unless this is explained to the entire nation. This is a task that must be solved as a promising company before dealing with the victims."
He also criticized the issue of delayed move-ins. Chairman Lee said, "No alternatives come to mind, and the future is unpredictable, so it is unclear how long and where people should live," adding, "Experts legally judging and compensating later without immediate alternatives is not acceptable. It is urgent."
Regarding the workers who lost their lives in the accident, he said, "Generally, those victims are very vulnerable people. That is why they are in high-risk industries, going to dangerous places," and added, "Since they are more vulnerable, it would be good to show consideration." He continued, "Dedicated on-site staff and experts should be assigned as a priority," and said, "It feels like legal measures are being prioritized. From the victims' perspective, this could be quite disappointing."
