[The Editors' Verdict]Yoon Seok-yeol Must Now Show His True Political Capability After Receiving Ahn Cheol-soo's Unification Proposal
On the 13th, Ahn Cheol-soo, the People Power Party (PPP) candidate who had been under pressure to unify candidacy with PPP’s Yoon Seok-yeol, suddenly announced his position on unification through a public opinion poll. Similar to the method used in the April 7th Seoul mayoral by-election last year, two polling agencies would each assess suitability and competitiveness by half, and then the results would be combined to determine the winner. Ahn’s unification proposal on this day appears to be a determination to escape the unavoidable ‘unification tunnel’ through a preemptive offensive.
Now, the ball is in Yoon Seok-yeol’s court. Regarding the unification through a public opinion poll proposed by Ahn Cheol-soo, Yoon said, “I will consider it, but there are also some regrets.” Since Yoon’s initially proposed ‘unification over a cup of coffee,’ that is, unification through a ‘final negotiation,’ has practically fallen through, the regret must be significant. However, given the large gap in support rates between Ahn and Yoon, Ahn also believes it would be difficult to persuade Yoon through a final negotiation. From Ahn’s perspective, this is a strategy to gain both ‘justification and practical benefit’ simultaneously. Moreover, since Ahn, who had strongly declared his intention to complete the presidential race, is now changing his stance to express willingness for unification, it is tantamount to a last-ditch effort.
However, the issue of unification between Yoon Seok-yeol and Ahn Cheol-soo involves several overlapping dilemmas, making it difficult to resolve and causing much concern. First, it is not easy for Yoon to accept Ahn’s proposal as is. In short, it is difficult to guarantee victory. Especially if the young generation in their 20s and 30s hold the casting vote, Yoon’s position becomes even more challenging. The possibility of rapid shifts in candidate support, like the movement of nomads, cannot be ruled out. Furthermore, Yoon has a high unfavorable rating. The so-called ‘reverse selection’ must also be considered. Ultimately, there is a concern that Yoon might lose to Ahn.
If Yoon does not accept Ahn’s proposal, Ahn will have no choice but to complete the presidential race. Having already withdrawn his initial firm intention to finish the race, the renewed commitment to complete it, which might be called a ‘rerun,’ will find it difficult to regain previous momentum. While Ahn might blame Yoon for the failure of unification, there is little practical benefit Ahn can gain from completing the presidential race.
Another point to consider is if Yoon and Ahn negotiate unification through a ‘third method.’ They might conduct public opinion polls but seek a new approach. However, this method inevitably leads to another power struggle to secure a more advantageous position. Meanwhile, the candidates get hurt, their support bases conflict, and the public grows weary. In this process, the defection of supporters and backlash from moderate voters will be painful wounds that must be endured.
Yoon, who finds it difficult to seize victory without unification with Ahn, will eventually have no choice but to come to the negotiation table. However, it is difficult for either Yoon’s or Ahn’s method to reach an easy agreement. Nevertheless, Yoon will again urge Ahn to voluntarily withdraw, and Ahn will call on Yoon to make a decision, saying he cannot back down. Both sides are standing at a critical juncture that could determine their political lives. Whether one wins, both fail, or a compromise is found, finding a solution is a difficult ‘dilemma.’ In this case, it is time for Yoon, who is more desperate for unification, to truly demonstrate his political capability.
