Trump: "Denuclearization is not a serious threat to North Korea but the greatest opportunity"
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Seon-ae] Former U.S. President Donald Trump emphasized on the 13th that "denuclearization of North Korea is not a serious threat, but the greatest opportunity."
At the 'Korean Peninsula Peace Summit' held both online and offline that day, former President Trump delivered a pre-recorded keynote speech video, stating, "I firmly believe that the best option North Korea can take is active cooperation, integration, and economic development. For that to happen, there must be no nuclear threat. Nuclear weapons do not help."
He said, "In recent years, North Korea's missile tests have been repeated several times, escalating tensions. North Korean State Affairs Commission Chairman Kim Jong-un neither respects nor trusts U.S. leaders," adding, "Everyone knows that if I were president, such things would never happen."
He urged, "I would call on North Korea not to make any decisions or take any actions that would jeopardize the precious opportunity earned through so much effort over the past four years," recalling, "We truly cooperated."
Former President Trump said, "We (North Korea and the U.S.) planted the seeds of peace and cooperation," and added, "Now is the time to make them bloom and grow into a huge tree. Losing such an opportunity would be a great tragedy."
Reflecting on the three past summits with Chairman Kim Jong-un, he said, "My relationship with him was amicable. Moreover, we liked each other very much."
Former President Trump stated, "Chairman Kim expressed hope for a more developed relationship, and I made it clear that the U.S. and its allies share the same desire as Chairman Kim," adding, "I told him directly that if this vision is to become a reality, North Korea must denuclearize."
He continued, "At the last summit in 2019, North Korea was not ready to take steps toward denuclearization, but we built trust and achieved a historic breakthrough," evaluating his efforts.
