End of South Korea-US Foreign Ministers Meeting: "Preventing Further Deterioration of the Korean Peninsula Situation"
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Ji-eun] The foreign ministers of South Korea and the United States met in Honolulu, USA, to share concerns over North Korea's missile launches and discuss cooperation measures to resume dialogue.
On the afternoon of the 12th, Foreign Minister Chung Eui-yong held a Korea-US foreign ministers' meeting with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken.
The two ministers expressed concern over North Korea's recent successive missile launches and agreed to closely cooperate to prevent further deterioration of the situation on the Korean Peninsula and to promptly resume dialogue with North Korea.
Minister Chung evaluated the fully coordinated North Korea strategy between South Korea and the US and stated that both countries will continue to closely consult to achieve the complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and establish lasting peace.
They also reassessed the strength of the Korea-US alliance. The two ministers evaluated that the Korea-US alliance, a key pillar of regional and global peace, security, and prosperity, continues to develop as a comprehensive and mutually beneficial alliance.
Minister Chung appreciated the US government's recent Indo-Pacific strategy announcement reaffirming its commitment to regional engagement, and Secretary Blinken mentioned that holding the Korea-US foreign ministers' meeting in Honolulu, following visits to Australia and Fiji, reflects the US's strong emphasis on the Korea-US alliance and robust regional engagement.
The meeting also covered the Ukraine issue. The two ministers expressed concern over Russia's troop buildup near Ukraine's border and firmly supported Ukraine's sovereignty, territorial integrity, and independence. They also exchanged views on other regional situations, including Myanmar and Iran.

Additionally, the two ministers evaluated that the Korea-US alliance continues to expand its cooperation horizon across a wide range of regions, including ASEAN, Central America, and Pacific island countries, and agreed to actively cooperate together to address global issues such as COVID-19 response, climate change, and supply chains.
