[Daejeon = Asia Economy Reporter Koo Chae-eun] Lee Jae-myung, the Democratic Party presidential candidate (photo), announced on the 12th that he would "push for a constitutional amendment to explicitly designate Sejong as the administrative capital."
On the 12th, at the 'Sejong' pledge announcement ceremony held at the Daejeon eSports Stadium, Candidate Lee said, "When discussions on constitutional amendment begin, we will establish a 'capital clause' and promptly proceed with the installation of the presidential office in Sejong and the construction of the National Assembly building." He emphasized, "I will show you the president working in Sejong." He mentioned the importance of the administrative capital, stating, "All infrastructure such as population, economy, jobs, and education is concentrated in the Seoul metropolitan area, creating a unipolar system that deepens inequality, which threatens the sustainability of the Republic of Korea."
Candidate Lee stated, "When administration and politics coexist in Sejong and achieve mutual checks and balances, Sejong can be reborn as a true administrative capital."
He also said that the relocation of public institutions to Sejong and the establishment of courts would be promoted step by step. He said, "Although 44 central administrative agencies have moved to Sejong, some still remain in the Seoul metropolitan area. Due to physical separation, inefficiencies occur in work cooperation and communication. We will promptly promote the relocation of remaining public institutions to Sejong to maximize efficiency and strengthen its function as the administrative capital."
Candidate Lee said he would push for the establishment of courts to respond to the increasing judicial demand along with Sejong's population growth. In addition, he promised ▲expansion of Sejong's cultural infrastructure, ▲promotion of Sejong Smart Health City development, and ▲early commencement of Sejong metropolitan railway and highway construction.
