Court Postpones Sentencing of Yoon Seok-yeol's Mother-in-law's Business Partner for 'Balance Certificate Forgery' Until After Presidential Election
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyung-min] The first trial verdict for Ahn, who was indicted on charges of forging bank balance certificates along with Choi Eun-soon, the mother-in-law of Yoon Seok-yeol, the People Power Party's presidential candidate, was scheduled for the 11th but was canceled. This was due to the court's decision to proceed with additional arguments. Accordingly, the verdict for Ahn has been postponed until after the presidential election.
According to the legal community on that day, the Criminal Division 13 of Uijeongbu District Court (Chief Judge Jung Sung-kyun), which is handling Ahn's case on charges including forgery of private documents, canceled the sentencing hearing scheduled for that morning and decided to resume arguments on April 1.
The closing arguments were held on the 7th of last month. The prosecution had requested a prison sentence of 1 year and 6 months.
With the sentencing postponed, the trial may be prolonged. It is expected to be affected by the regular judicial personnel reshuffle scheduled for the 21st.
Ahn was indicted on charges of conspiring with Choi to forge a bank balance certificate showing a deposit of 34.7 billion won during the purchase of land in Dochon-dong, Seongnam-si, Gyeonggi Province, from April to October 2013. He is also charged with contracting and registering the land purchase under the names of his son-in-law and others.

Last year, regarding Choi Eun-soon, the first trial judge Park Se-hwang of the Criminal Division 8 of Uijeongbu District Court sentenced her to one year in prison, stating that "the amount on the forged balance certificate was huge and the crime was committed repeatedly over multiple occasions." Choi is currently appealing this case. Separately, in the case of illegal receipt of nursing care benefits, for which she was indicted independently from the balance certificate forgery case, she was acquitted in last month's appellate trial.
