Ryu Geun-gwan, Head of Statistics Korea, "Pursuing Amendment of Statistics Act to Secure Legal Status for Use of Administrative Data"
[Asia Economy Sejong=Reporter Kim Hyewon] Ryu Geun-gwan, Commissioner of the Korea National Statistical Office, announced on the 11th that he attended the workshop hosted by the Institute for Mathematical and Statistical Innovation (IMSI) held via video conference. IMSI is a research institute supported by the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) that applies mathematics and statistics to social and scientific issues and seeks transformation.
The workshop, held under the theme "Machine Learning on Encrypted Data," gathered world-renowned scholars and experts including Vinod Vaikuntanathan, professor at MIT, Christine Lauter, director of Facebook AI Research, and Shai Halevi, research fellow at the Algorand Foundation, to discuss technical issues related to privacy protection in the application of AI such as machine learning.
As the keynote speaker, Commissioner Ryu introduced the K-Statistics system of the Statistical Office, which safely stores, links, combines, and utilizes public data, under the theme "Hub and Spoke Model of Government Statistics," and presented application cases and future development plans.
Commissioner Ryu stated, "We are currently utilizing the latest technologies such as homomorphic encryption, differential privacy, and synthetic data to enhance data security in the K-Statistics system that links data at the Statistical Data Center (SDC)," and added, "We are promoting amendments to the Statistics Act to secure the legal status of administrative data use."

He continued, "Through the development of the K-Statistics system, we will promote data cooperation among government agencies and maximize data value to contribute to evidence-based policy support," and said, "We will share utilization technologies with the international community."
