US Navy Deploys Next-Generation Unmanned Reconnaissance Helicopter for Operations
[Asia Economy Yang Nak-gyu, Military Specialist Reporter] The U.S. Navy's next-generation maritime unmanned reconnaissance helicopter, the MQ-8C Fire Scout, has recently completed operational deployment.
Northrop Grumman stated on the 9th, "The Fire Scout is deployed on the USS Milwaukee (LCS-5) and provides the U.S. Navy with enhanced Intelligence, Surveillance, Reconnaissance, and Targeting (ISR&T) capabilities."
The Fire Scout boasts an excellent payload capacity, over 10 hours of endurance, and a range exceeding 1,000 nautical miles, enabling flexible mission execution such as real-time over-the-horizon target acquisition. Furthermore, when operated alongside manned aircraft, the Fire Scout allows command units to utilize manned assets more efficiently.
The Fire Scout uses the Bell 407 commercial aircraft as its airframe, securing initial development, supply chain, and flight hour reliability. Notably, it offers cost-effectiveness by reducing total lifecycle costs. Additionally, the Fire Scout is equipped with the Leonardo AN/ZPY-8 Osprey radar, which enables long-range detection and automatic tracking even in challenging conditions such as nighttime and adverse weather where visibility is limited.
Based on the design by the Northrop Grumman-Bell collaborative team, the Fire Scout demonstrated initial operational capability in June 2019 and is expected to replace the existing MQ-8B model through future deployments.
