Gangwon-do Invests 50.4 Billion KRW in 'Livestock Industry Innovation Growth and Premium Product Differentiation'
Focused Investment in 54 Projects Across 12 Sectors in 2022
Enhancing Livestock Product Added Value and Establishing a Safe Distribution System
[Asia Economy Reporter Ra Young-cheol] Gangwon Province will pursue innovative growth and differentiation of premium livestock products this year by improving the livestock industry's structure.
The province announced on the 8th that it will invest 50.4 billion KRW in 54 projects across 12 areas, including carbon neutrality response, fostering environmentally friendly livestock farming, and strengthening disaster and climate change response.
To expand carbon sinks, 10 billion KRW will be invested in 12 projects such as expanding the self-sufficiency base for forage and utilizing indigenous resources, and 9.9 billion KRW will be allocated to 9 projects for efficient livestock manure treatment and systematic management of livestock odors.
Additionally, 12.2 billion KRW will be invested to enhance farm competitiveness and modernize production infrastructure by establishing a precision livestock improvement system including Hanwoo genome analysis and improving quality and productivity to respond to livestock product import liberalization.
Disaster support projects such as fire and heatwave response and livestock disaster insurance will receive 4.7 billion KRW, and 2.3 billion KRW will be invested to improve animal welfare and foster smart livestock farming.
Furthermore, 3.7 billion KRW will be invested to popularize horse riding and intensively develop the beekeeping industry, strengthening the multifunctional roles of livestock farming and establishing a future growth foundation for the sector.
To establish a safe distribution system, 7.6 billion KRW will be invested in 12 projects including the development of livestock product brands such as Gangwon Hanwoo and milk, new brand development, and advancement of livestock product traceability operations.
The province assessed that the livestock industry is facing difficult conditions threatening its sustainability, as it coexists with livestock diseases, faces strengthened regulations including environmental ones, and as greenhouse gas reduction plans for carbon neutrality in the livestock sector are being concretized.

Kim Bok-jin, Director of Agricultural Policy, stated, "We will foster livestock farming that coexists with local communities through proactive responses such as carbon neutrality and odor reduction, and differentiate it as clean and safe premium livestock products embodying the value of Gangwon Province."
