Jeju Region Records Highest Ever 169 COVID-19 Cases in One Day on the 2nd
[Jeju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Park Chang-won] On the 2nd, 169 new COVID-19 cases were confirmed in the Jeju area in a single day, breaking the previous daily record for the highest number of cases in Jeju Province in just one day.
The Jeju Special Self-Governing Province announced on the 3rd that 169 people tested positive on the 2nd, bringing the total cumulative number of confirmed cases in the province to 5,799.
During the Lunar New Year holiday period alone, 520 people were confirmed infected, and a total of 640 infections occurred in the past week.
This represents an increase of 404 cases compared to the previous week, with the average daily number of confirmed cases over the past week rising threefold from 33.7 last week to 91.43.
The volume of diagnostic tests is also surging.
On the 2nd alone, 5,812 people underwent diagnostic testing, and the average number of tests conducted over the past week reached 3,845.
Looking at the infection routes of the new confirmed cases that day, 66 were contacts of confirmed cases within the province, accounting for 39% of all confirmed cases, while 67 cases had unknown infection routes.
Additionally, 35 cases were related to other regions, and 1 case was an overseas entrant.
Among the 67 cases with unknown infection routes, 36 are currently under epidemiological investigation.
The increasing daily diagnostic test numbers and confirmed cases are also revealing limitations in epidemiological investigations.
Meanwhile, as of midnight that day, the vaccination completion rate relative to the provincial population was 85.3%, and the third-dose vaccination rate was 50.3%.
