[Asia Economy Reporter Jeong Hyunjin] Russian President Vladimir Putin, ahead of attending the opening ceremony of the Beijing Winter Olympics, emphasized in a contribution to China's Xinhua News Agency on the 3rd that Russia and China are "close neighbors connected by centuries-old traditions of friendship and trust."
In an article titled "Russia and China: Strategic Partners Looking to the Future," submitted to Xinhua News Agency on the same day, President Putin stated this. He said, "As we enter a new era, the comprehensive partnership and strategic cooperation between Russia and China have reached an unprecedented level, and I highly appreciate that it has become a model of efficiency, responsibility, and aspiration for the future."
President Putin also quoted the Chinese proverb "The year's plan is in spring," saying that during this visit to China, he will have comprehensive discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping on bilateral, regional, and international agendas. He emphasized, "Discussions on international issues will be an important part," and "The coordination of foreign policies between Russia and China is based on similar approaches to solving global and regional problems."
Furthermore, President Putin said he plans to focus on discussing the development of economic and trade cooperation between the two countries. He added, "Despite difficulties caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, both countries are striving to enhance the potential of their economic partnership," and pledged to further strengthen cooperation.
In addition, President Putin evaluated that there are opportunities for the two countries to develop a broad partnership in advanced fields such as information and communications, medicine, national navigation systems, including China's recently prioritized lunar exploration project.
Regarding the Beijing Winter Olympics, he referred to it as "the most important international event," expressing confidence that "China's experience will enable the Beijing Olympics to be held at the highest level. Although recent attempts to politicize sports have intensified, this goes against the Olympic spirit."
