UN Grants First Sanctions Exemption This Year for North Korea's 'COVID-19 Aid Supplies' from Domestic Groups
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Ji-eun] The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) Committee on North Korea Sanctions has approved, for the first time this year, an exemption from sanctions for North Korea aid supplies provided by a domestic civil organization.
According to the UNSC North Korea Sanctions Committee website on the 3rd, the North-South Economic Cooperation Research Institute, a North Korea-related civil organization, applied for a sanctions exemption for COVID-19 prevention supplies to be delivered to the Pyonganbuk Province area of North Korea, which was approved on the 26th of last month.
The exempted items are 20 thermal imaging cameras for COVID-19 prevention, marking the first case of a sanctions exemption approved by the North Korea Sanctions Committee this year.
