New York Times Surpasses 10 Million Subscribers
[Asia Economy Reporter Cho Hyun-ui] The American daily newspaper The New York Times (NYT) has surpassed 10 million subscribers. On the 2nd (local time), NYT announced, "We completed the acquisition of the online sports media The Athletic yesterday."
NYT originally aimed to reach 10 million subscribers by 2025, but with the acquisition of The Athletic, it gained an additional 1.2 million subscribers.
As of the last week of December last year, the existing subscriber count was close to 8.8 million. By service, there were 5.9 million digital news subscribers, about 2 million subscribers to other digital content such as games and cooking, and 800,000 print newspaper subscribers.
On the same day, NYT announced a new goal to secure at least 15 million subscribers by the end of 2027. Meredith Kopit Levien, NYT CEO, said, "I believe there are at least 135 million potential readers worldwide willing to pay for English news, sports coverage, puzzles, cooking, and expert shopping advice."
