Yoon Seok-yeol: "Government Must Prioritize Protecting Its Citizens... Why Worry About North Korea If Nothing Wrong"
[Asia Economy Reporter Ki-min Lee] Yoon Seok-yeol, the presidential candidate of the People Power Party, met with the bereaved family, including the spouse and son, of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries official who was killed by North Korean soldiers in the West Sea in September 2020 at the party headquarters in Yeouido on the 31st.
At the meeting, he said, "The government must not forget that while pursuing political, diplomatic, and economic interests, the safety and protection of its citizens must be the top priority."
Candidate Yoon emphasized, "The people judge whether to trust this country and be loyal to it by seeing how the government protects each citizen in difficulty."
He stated, "(The government) has not informed the family of the full details and circumstances of your father's unfortunate incident and is spreading irrelevant stories. The family's disappointment and grief are very great," adding, "The truth will soon be revealed, so although it is difficult, I ask you to endure well."
Candidate Yoon questioned, "If the government did its best to protect the people, shouldn't it have shown the entire process to the public?"
He continued, "What exactly did they do wrong to be so cautious of North Korea? What did they fail to do to be so submissive? How much wrongdoing is there that they cannot disclose the truth?" he criticized.
Until now, the bereaved family of the killed official has demanded the government fully disclose the circumstances at the time of the killing.
