Jeju Region Surpasses 5,000 Cumulative COVID-19 Cases
[Jeju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Park Chang-won] Since the first COVID-19 case was confirmed in the Jeju area, the cumulative number of confirmed cases has surpassed 5,000 after about 700 days.
According to Jeju Special Self-Governing Province on the 24th, out of 2,670 diagnostic tests conducted the previous day, 20 people were newly confirmed positive.
Among the confirmed cases that day, 4 were contacts of confirmed cases within the province, and 8 were classified as visitors from other regions or contacts of confirmed cases from other regions.
Five were overseas entrants, and the remaining 3 were symptomatic COVID-19 cases with unclear infection routes.
At the beginning of this month, the number of confirmed cases dropped to single digits, showing a stable trend, but recently the number of confirmed cases has been rising again.
The total number of confirmed cases in the past week was 105, an increase of 39 from the previous week, with a daily average of 15 cases.
The number of confirmed cases this month has exceeded 341. Following 421 cases in 2020 and 4,240 cases last year, the cumulative number of confirmed cases in the region has reached a total of 5,002.
Omicron variant cases are steadily increasing in the Jeju area as well.
On the 23rd alone, 6 additional Omicron variant cases were confirmed in Jeju.
Four were related to overseas entry and two were domestic cases, bringing the total cumulative number of Omicron confirmed cases to 70.
Jeju's quarantine authorities stated, "The Omicron virus already introduced into the region may manifest around the Lunar New Year holiday after an incubation period," and added, "We hope that unnecessary contact will be minimized as much as possible."
