2020 Content Industry Export Surpasses 14 Trillion Won

In 2020, the export value of the content industry surpassed 14 trillion won, fueled by the Korean Wave. According to the "Content Industry Survey (2020 data)" announced by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism on the 24th, the export value of the content industry in 2020 was $11.92428 billion (approximately 14.234 trillion won). This represents a 16.3% increase from $10.25388 billion (approximately 12.24 trillion won) in 2019. Notable growth was seen in sectors such as publishing (61.1%), film (43.0%), comics (36.3%), broadcasting (28.5%), and games (23.1%). The largest export value was in games, totaling $8.19356 billion (9.7839 trillion won). This was followed by characters ($715.81 million), broadcasting ($692.79 million), knowledge information ($691.99 million), and music ($679.63 million).
The total sales revenue of the content industry was recorded at 128.287 trillion won, a 1.2% increase from 126.7123 trillion won the previous year. With the rise in demand for non-face-to-face online cultural content, digital distribution-based games (21.3%) and comics (14.7%) experienced rapid growth. Conversely, sectors such as film (53.6%), animation (13.6%), and music (11.0%), which rely on face-to-face on-site sales, saw sharp declines in revenue. Broadcasting had the highest sales revenue at 21.9647 trillion won, followed by publishing (21.6488 trillion won), knowledge information (19.3734 trillion won), games (18.8855 trillion won), and advertising (17.4218 trillion won). The number of businesses and workers in the content industry were counted at 99,551 and 642,086 respectively, showing decreases of 4.4% and 5.9% compared to 2019. Due to the spread of COVID-19, operations of movie theaters and performance venues were restricted, making it difficult to maintain previous levels.

This data was compiled by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism based on surveys of eight industry businesses and results from the Korea Creative Content Agency, the Korean Film Council, and the Korea Information Society Development Institute, which examined the game, film, and broadcasting industries respectively. It systematically provides statistical information on eleven industries based on content industry classification: publishing, comics, music, games, film, animation, broadcasting, characters, knowledge information, and content solutions.
