[Asia Economy Reporter Dongwoo Lee] The CJ Logistics Courier Agency Union announced on the 19th, "We urge the courier union, which repeatedly strikes disregarding the suffering of small business owners and the public, to withdraw the strike unconditionally."
On the same day, the CJ Logistics Courier Agency Union, along with courier workers, held a press statement titled "Condemning the baseless general strike by the National Courier Union" in front of the CJ Logistics headquarters located in Jung-gu, Seoul, demanding that "the courier union, courier operators, and the government fulfill their responsibilities and roles to normalize courier services."
The agency union stated, "We cannot tolerate the courier union, which distorts social agreements and demands profit distribution by holding the public’s goods hostage, causing suffering to countless courier workers and the public," and added, "CJ Logistics courier workers strongly condemn the National Courier Labor Union."
They warned, "The courier labor union must unconditionally stop the strike and work slowdown, immediately return to on-site duties, deeply reflect on their responsibility for the baseless struggle that holds the public’s goods hostage, and the leadership must resign en masse." They also plan to file complaints and lawsuits regarding the union’s obstruction of work, verbal abuse, and assault.
Furthermore, they emphasized, "CJ Logistics courier operators must prepare special measures for areas affected by service disruptions to protect the majority of courier workers and fulfill their responsibility to stabilize courier services." They also urged the government to "actively monitor the implementation of social agreements and establish policies to minimize public inconvenience, such as designating the courier industry as an essential public service."
The agency union criticized, "The courier union, which claimed to prevent courier workers’ overwork, is pushing the majority of couriers into overwork," and added, "They are exploiting the couriers who passed away under difficult conditions for their own profit distribution."
The agency union stated, "In efforts to establish measures against courier workers’ death from overwork, the ruling party including the executive branch and stakeholders related to courier services agreed to exclude sorting tasks from the basic duties of courier workers," but the courier union ignores the public’s concessions and consideration and demands distribution of the courier fee increase," they pointed out.
They continued, "CJ Logistics’ courier service must not be halted by the actions of a small group," and asserted, "We can no longer overlook the destruction of the courier field, built through years of hard work and sweat, by a small courier union."
The agency union explained, "Even now, please lift the suspension of acceptance (collection restrictions) and deliver all goods arriving in the affected areas through alternative delivery," adding, "Even if union members strike, goods in the affected areas must be delivered normally to prevent consumer inconvenience and loss of shipper clients, while minimizing damage to the majority of honest general courier workers."
They also called for active intervention by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport regarding this strike. The agency union said, "We wonder why the Ministry of Employment and Labor is remaining silent and indifferent," and stated, "The Ministry of Employment and Labor must fulfill its role and responsibility to supervise and improve illegal strike sites."
