Semiconductor Chip Talent Battle... MS, Apple Talent Recruitment
[Asia Economy Reporter Yujin Cho] Microsoft (MS), the world's largest software company, recently recruited a key semiconductor design talent from Apple. Meta (formerly Facebook) is also actively recruiting external talent for independent chip development, intensifying the talent war among big tech companies amid the semiconductor supply shortage.
On the 12th (local time), Bloomberg News reported, citing an anonymous source, that MS has hired Mike Filippo, a veteran semiconductor designer from Apple.
Filippo, formerly of AMD and Intel, was recognized for his significant contributions to improving the performance of ARM semiconductors used in Apple smartphones. He will be in charge of the processor division for MS's cloud service, Azure.
Bloomberg stated, "This is part of MS's effort to independently develop server chips that power the Azure cloud computing service," adding, "If MS secures chips exclusively for Azure, longtime supply partners Intel and AMD will be impacted."
MS has shown movements to independently develop customized chips for servers as well as PC and tablet products. Last year, it also opened a public recruitment for the development of system-on-chip integrating various semiconductors such as processors, graphics, audio-video, and storage devices into a single chip.
Big tech companies, struggling to secure chips amid the global semiconductor supply shortage triggered by COVID-19, are accelerating their independent chip development efforts.
Meta is also recruiting external talent for independent chip development. Having declared business expansion into the metaverse, Meta is absorbing a large number of virtual reality and augmented reality development personnel from outside to secure service competitiveness amid intensifying competition.
