'Pro-China' Tendencies of New Honduran President, Invitation to Taiwan President
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Min-young] Hong Kong media Sing Tao Daily reported on the 13th that Xiomara Castro, President of Honduras, who mentioned the possibility of establishing diplomatic relations with China during her presidential campaign, has invited Tsai Ing-wen, President of Taiwan.
Sing Tao Daily reported that President Castro, who officially took office on the 27th of last month, invited President Tsai, indirectly denying rumors of severing diplomatic ties with Taiwan. Honduras is one of the 14 countries worldwide that maintain diplomatic relations with Taiwan.
Chang Chun-han, spokesperson for the Taiwan Presidential Office, said on the 12th, "Regarding Honduras' invitation, Taiwan will announce detailed information in due course."
Known for her pro-China stance, President Castro stated in September last year, when she was a candidate, "If I win the election, I will immediately open diplomatic and commercial relations with mainland China." China requires acceptance of the "One China" principle as a condition for establishing diplomatic relations, which means severing ties with Taiwan.
