Lee Cheol-woo, Governor of Gyeongbuk, Attends Central-Local Cooperation Meeting for New Collaboration Opportunities
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Gui-yeol] Lee Cheol-woo, Governor of Gyeongbuk Province, attended the 1st Central-Local Cooperation Meeting held at the Blue House State Guest House on the 13th.
The meeting, presided over by President Moon Jae-in, lasted 70 minutes and was attended by governors of 17 cities and provinces, chairpersons of the four major local councils, Prime Minister Kim Boo-kyum, and vice ministers from 10 ministries including the Ministry of Economy and Finance, Ministry of Education, and Ministry of Industry.
The main agenda included reports and discussions on the Ministry of Economy and Finance Minister's plans for regional economic revitalization, the status and future plans for ultra-wide area cooperation promoted by the Office for Government Policy Coordination Chief, and the achievements and development tasks for the 2.0 era of local autonomy presented by the Chairman of the Autonomy Committee.
Governor Lee highly evaluated that the cooperation system between the central and local governments, which will open a new history of local autonomy, has now been established as a law he originally proposed as a member of the National Assembly was realized after 10 years.
Governor Lee emphasized, “To open the era of 50,000 USD income in Korea, power and capital from the central government must be distributed to local governments to create a system where both local and central governments can win-win together.”
He also pointed out that the solution lies in significantly delegating authority to local governments and creating economic zones with populations over 5 million so that local areas can gain competitiveness.
Regarding the administrative integration of Daegu and Gyeongbuk, he proposed that metropolitan entities join forces to concretely establish the legal basis and roadmap for administrative integration.
This Central-Local Cooperation Meeting is based on the Local Autonomy Act, which was completely revised on January 12 last year and came into effect on January 13 this year.
