[Asia Economy Reporter Ra Young-cheol] On the 13th, Goyang City held a launch ceremony for the 1 million population Goyang Special City at the City Hall Cultural Center.
About 120 people attended the ceremony, including Lee Jae-jun, Mayor of Goyang, Lee Gil-yong, Chairman of the Goyang City Council, members of the National Assembly, members of the Gyeonggi Provincial Assembly, members of the Goyang City Council, and citizens of Goyang.
Prime Minister Kim Boo-kyum, Minister of the Interior and Safety Jeon Hae-cheol, and Kim Soon-eun, Chairperson of the Presidential Committee on Autonomy and Decentralization, sent congratulatory messages via video.
Before the main event, a plaque unveiling ceremony for 'Goyang Special City Hall' and 'Goyang Special City Council' was also held.
As a special city, it can receive and execute delegated authority, affairs, and finances from the central government or the province. In the field of local finance, the increased budget can be used to expand urban infrastructure such as transportation, culture, education, and welfare facilities.
Specific delegation of authority is still in progress. The four cities of Goyang, Suwon, Yongin, and Changwon are currently negotiating with the central government and Gyeonggi Province regarding a total of 86 functions and 383 affairs.
