Yongin City Gains Momentum as a Global Semiconductor Hub
[Asia Economy (Yongin) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] With the inclusion of 10 industrial complexes within Yongin city, including the Yongin Platform City Urban High-Tech Industrial Complex, in Gyeonggi Province's industrial complex designation plan, Yongin's plan to become a global semiconductor production hub has gained momentum.
Yongin City announced on the 9th that Gyeonggi Province revealed its plan to designate 29 industrial complexes, including 25 general industrial complexes and 4 urban high-tech industrial complexes within the province, through the '2022 Gyeonggi Province Industrial Complex Designation Plan' announced on the 6th.
The urban high-tech industrial complexes ▲Gyeonggi Yongin Platform City Urban High-Tech Industrial Complex ▲Yongin Giheung Future Urban High-Tech Industrial Complex ▲Yongin Guseong TINA Urban High-Tech Technotown ▲Hallim Pharmaceutical Urban High-Tech Industrial Complex are all adjacent to Yongin City.
Additionally, six locations within Yongin ? ▲Yongin Smart-e ▲Tongsam 2 ▲Jukneung ▲2nd Yongin Technovalley ▲Wonsam ▲Yongin HL Genomics ? have been designated as general industrial complexes.
The Gyeonggi Yongin Platform City Urban High-Tech Industrial Complex will be developed in Bojeong-dong and Singal-dong areas of Giheung-gu. The city, Gyeonggi Province, Gyeonggi Housing and Urban Corporation, and Yongin Urban Corporation will participate as joint project implementers. Centered around the GTX Yongin Station in Giheung-gu, a future-oriented complex city will be created, combining high value-added advanced manufacturing facilities such as semiconductors, IT, telecommunications, medical and bio industries, along with supporting commercial, office, residential, cultural, and welfare facilities.
The Yongin Giheung Future Urban High-Tech Industrial Complex will be developed in the Gomae-dong area of Giheung-gu. Semes Co., Ltd., the largest semiconductor equipment company in Korea, will invest 600 billion KRW by 2024 to build an R&D center. Upon completion of the industrial complex, it is expected to create 5,000 jobs and generate an economic ripple effect worth 2 trillion KRW.
The 2nd Yongin Technovalley will be developed in Deokseong-ri, Idong-eup, Cheoin-gu. It will serve as a complementary industrial complex to the Yongin Semiconductor Cluster being promoted in the nearby Wonsam-myeon area, accommodating numerous small and medium-sized enterprises related to semiconductor materials, parts, and equipment.
Thus, in the eastern region, the Yongin Semiconductor Cluster and the 2nd Yongin Technovalley will be established, while in the western region, the Gyeonggi Yongin Platform City and Yongin Giheung Future Urban High-Tech Industrial Complex will be constructed.
The city plans to attract a large number of semiconductor-related companies and establish a foundation for Yongin to emerge as a global semiconductor production hub through collaboration with semiconductor companies located in Yongin, including Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, which hold the top one or two shares in global memory semiconductor production, as well as Lam Research and Surplus Global.
