[Asia Economy Reporter Junhyung Lee] Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Union (EU) Commission, called on January 7 (local time) for an end to the violence amid large-scale anti-government protests that have continued for six days in Kazakhstan.
According to the US video media outlet APTN, President von der Leyen stated at a press conference held with French President Emmanuel Macron at the ?lys?e Palace on the same day, "The situation in Kazakhstan is very concerning." President von der Leyen visited Paris and met with President Emmanuel Macron after France took over the EU presidency in the first half of this year.
President von der Leyen said, "The rights and safety of the people of Kazakhstan are paramount and must be protected," adding, "The EU is ready to provide assistance if possible." President Macron expressed full agreement with President von der Leyen's remarks and also indicated a willingness to intervene in the Kazakhstan situation.
