Nike Sues Lululemon for Patent Infringement on Home Workout App
[Asia Economy Reporter Kwon Jae-hee] Nike has filed a lawsuit against Canadian sportswear company Lululemon, known for its yoga apparel brand.
According to CNBC on the 5th (local time), Nike sued Lululemon in the U.S. District Court in Manhattan, New York, citing patent infringement related to home fitness devices and associated mobile applications (apps).
Nike claims that Lululemon infringed on six of its patents during the development and sale of an app related to the home training product 'Mirror Home Gym.'
Nike based its claim on the fact that it invented and filed patents in 1983 for a device that measures users' speed, distance traveled, and calories burned.
Additionally, Nike has released popular mobile apps such as Nike Run Club and Nike Training Club, which it also claims Lululemon infringed upon its patent rights.
Earlier, Lululemon acquired 'Mirror' for $500 million while consumers stayed at home during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Mirror is a home fitness service that guides users through workouts via a wall-mounted device.
