National Gugak Center's 'Akri·Akje' and 'Akbo Gayageum Bo' Reprints and Annotations
Materials Presumed to Be Textbooks for Iwangjik Aakbu Training Center
The National Gugak Center announced on the 6th that it has published the "Korean Musicology Materials Series," which compiles the 'Akri·Akje' and 'Sheet Music Gayageum Bo' that were owned by the late master Hong Won-gi. These materials are presumed to have been used as textbooks at the predecessor institution, the Yi Wangjik Court Music Office Training Institute. The materials were donated by Master Hong's wife, Kim Bong-sun, enabling their reproduction and annotation. 'Akri·Akje' is a book describing music theory and related systems. An official stated, "The included 'Joseon Akbu Hojip' will advance the understanding of modern musical notation symbols and signs." The 'Sheet Music Gayageum Bo' contains pieces helpful for the study of notation methods, such as 'Oun Gaeseojo,' 'Haseong Hwanip,' 'Hwanghacheong Jigok,' 'Suyo Namgeuk,' and 'Junggwang Jigok.' Researcher Moon Ju-seok provided annotations and various bibliographic information. Kim Young-woon, director of the National Gugak Center, said, "This series offers an opportunity to reconsider the historical value of Akbu materials," and added, "We hope it will be meaningfully utilized by those researching gugak." Since 1979, the National Gugak Center has been reproducing and annotating old sheet music, Uigwe, music books, and dance notation through the "Korean Musicology Materials Series."
